It's taken me a while to get Sara to agree to sit down with me, because anything like this is massively out of her comfort zone. And I kept asking, because Sara is my accountant, so if ever I was going to pod an accountant (which I wanted to do), it HAD to be her.
But she did eventually agree, and of course, did a great job, and has a great story!
Pre sitting down with Sara, I thought... assumed... that she had always loved maths/numbers and so accountancy was a natural and obvious route for her from a young age.
But no.
Although she was always GREAT at maths, Sara pursued languages at college and Uni and then kind-of fell into accountancy, almost on a whim... Only to absolutely boss it while working for some really big - and very complex and highly scrutinised - corporations.
Then, when she had her kiddies and moved away from the corporate world and into smaller, self-employed 'practice' accountancy, Sara (of course) similarly bossed that. Whilst also bossing it as a mum to three.
Cards on the table, I've actually (purposely) not included a lot of the self-doubt comments Sara made throughout the chat; because without them, her chat is confident and a great (and I think, a better) representation of who she actually is, rather than who she sometimes thinks she is.
But even so, I felt Sara's self-doubt throughout the chat... I feel it with so many women I speak to, and it makes me so cross! So cross that society STILL makes amazing women feel that way, no matter how much they have achieved; no matter how many plates they juggle, and no matter how much they get 'right'.
Enjoy,
Chops x
