Break Room 9: With Gemma: Ai Vs the creative industry...

I'm super grateful for Gemma sitting down with me for this Break Room chat; she's a busy / manic working mum, and as such her time is absolute gold dust. But this chat (or a version of it) is something I've wanted to do for a while, not least out of concern for all the creative careers and creative jobs out there, that I worry may become even fewer and even farer between.
Ai, robotronics and the beast that is Chat GPT, are in the news nearly every day... The flag wavers bigging them up; the naysayers pulling them down. However, last week was different. Google announced their super-advanced third generation Veo video system: https://time.com/7290050/veo-3-google-misinformation-deepfake, to a predictably mixed reaction. Lots hailing it's ability to create unbelievably realistic (albeit utterly fake) video without any human interaction beyond the person clicking the mouse (which ergo means it can be done by virtually anyone). The other side hailing the beginning of the end for humanity.
Perhaps the most interesting (and worrying) comment I read, was a professor stating that if this was what they were releasing to the public, imagine what they are using behind closed doors? And if this was now being released, how much have Google (the primary/definitive search engine/tech beast on the planet) been using it pre this? What have they released and what have we seen that we didn't even know was fake? Because that's a basic fundamental of beta-testing: How realistic is realistic? How many people did it fool for it to get the greenlight for being believable?
There is undoubtedly A LOT to unpack here, and Gemma and I barely scratched the surface really. Our main focus, given Gemma's job as an IP and Trademark attorney, was to discuss Ai's impact on OG creators... The people that shot the images to start with; that established the design trends; that wrote the informative copy; that OWN the copyright to the content that Ai mines and harvests to create something new. Because it does create something new. It does what designers and writers have been doing for generations - taking inspiration from others - copying others to some extend (sometimes quite literally, hence why Gemma even has a job), and homogenising it into something new.
Something as opportunistic, as vast and as rapid as Ai, is almost impossible to officiate, regulations in place or not. Which is why no real decisions have been made yet. But some decisions need to be made - soon!
Enjoy,
Chops x
