Break Room 10: With Harrison: Youth Vs the (working) world...

Harrison is the son of a wonderful friend of mine... Well, two wonderful friends, and as such he's a wonderful young man. As you'll hear (when you listen to the pod), he's also incredibly eloquent, confident and incredibly social for a 19-year old (young) man.

I had so much to ask him about his generation... Which was unfair. However, he did the best he could to answer questions like: What do you think the working world is going to be like when you graduate? How motivated by money is your generation? How (face-to-face) social is your generation?

Inevitably our conversation turned to Ai a few times, and it was sad to hear Harrison say that he had NO idea how Ai was going to impact the industry he's hoping to work in; and how after his 7-years at Uni (yep, 7), he's fully aware that he might not even get a job doing it, because the world will have changed so much.

We also chatted a bit about the 'in-person' social skills of his generation, and indeed the 'Andrew Tate' 'incel' impact on young men. I honestly could have chatted to Harrison for hours!

I think the biggest take-out I got from chatting to Harrison, was seeing and hearing the blissful ignorance of youth; and I 100% do not mean that as an insult.

... His worries aside, Harrison is having the time of his life at Uni, which in itself is an interesting reminder. Despite the astronomical costs of University now, it IS an amazing, liberating experience for young people (if done right). It's their first chance to be independent and in FULL control of their lives, without the pressures of day-to-day working (adult life).... Pressures that will grow and grow and which they'll spend the rest of their lives bearing. Putting all 'that' off for a few years has got to be good for the human soul and spirit, right?

It's certainly good for Harrison, and he truly lives in the moment; and in this moment he is happy and having a great time, so he doesn't dwell the past or worry (too much) for the future. Of course, lots of young people do worry about both of those - the future especially - but it made me ponder my own youth... Myself at 19... Was I equally as blissfully unaware?

Probably.... Definitely.

Tip of the iceberg discussion with Harrison, so lots more on this to come.

Enjoy,

Chops x
